04 Yamaha roadstar 1700cc sputtering problem?

When the motor is cold for about the first 3 miles it sputters, shutters, and shakes, and sometimes dies. but after it gets warm it seems to run fine....Any suggestions or has this happend to you. What is causing it????? It only has 3000 miles on it and the plugs are clean.
