Waterproof formulations are designed to hold curls better. However, if you're totally against it then the trick is in the application, not the product. First curl your lashes, then apply one very thin coat of mascara. Let it dry completely, then recurl your lashes. Add a few more coats of mascara and that should hold the curl for much longer. If it gets clumpy use an eyelash comb to comb through it. Try it, you'll see a world of difference. Good luck.
