How is Port of Spain (Trinidad) compared to Montego Bay or Nau?

I am thinking about accepting a job offer in Port of Spain in Trindad. My american friends urge me not to do it because they say it is not a nice place and too dangerous. I would like to know from Caribbeans who have been there how it is. I lived both in Jamaica before and also in the Bahamas and I'm wondering if it is just different for Americans. Please tell me as much as possible!
